link to donate to the Sunset Park 44th Street Fire Community Fund.

Dear Neighbors,

My heart is with the injured residents and fire fighters of the residential building fire that broke out last evening in Sunset Park. Twenty three people have sustained injuries, but I am happy to report that everyone is in stable condition. I wish them good health and I will be in contact with them to ensure that they and their families receive the assistance that they need.

The Red Cross, the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and I will be at the Sunset Park Recreation Center (4200 Seventh Avenue) today helping people sign up to receive Emergency Housing Assistance, helping them see to their medical needs, and providing them with other government resources as the need comes up.

Residents have had to sleep at local hotels and are unable to enter the building to retrieve their belongings. Any support you may provide them would be incredibly beneficial right now and as the initial impact settles. Local residents and community based organizations have created a GoFundMe page, linked here. I encourage all who are able to do so, to donate to the Sunset Park 44th Street Fire Community Fund or donate personal care items to the Sunset Park BID office during their regular office hours.

Please refer to my staff member Ivan Valladares at for more information and questions on how you may support. Follow my Facebook account @NYCouncilMember38 or my Twitter account @NYCCouncil38 for updates and information on how you may help.

Wishing everyone a safe day.

In your service,

Carlos Menchaca
